- The Kimberley region is rightly called “The Last Frontier”.

- Kununurra’s two closest major towns are Darwin in the Northern Territory (850 kl north east), and Broome W.A. (1100 kl south west).

- Kununurra is in the Wyndham/East Kimberley Shire (population – a mere 7,775 in an area of 121,189 sq. kilometers).

- In land size our Parish is only slightly smaller than England and would rank at # 32 in the sizes of U.S. States being approx. the same size as Mississippi.

- According to the 2006 National Census 3,748 people live in the urban centre of Kununurra with 25% being children under 15 years of age and 26.5% being Aboriginal.

- The town is one of the youngest in the State being formed in 1961 and officially opened in 1963 by Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies.

- The Shire’s main industries are cattle, agriculture, tourism, and the Argyle Diamond Mine. Some 70,000 visitors come to town annually.

- The climate is tropical with “wet” and “dry” seasons with extreme temperatures and flooding in the summer months, and the warm to hot winter days being the best days anywhere in Australia.

- The mighty Ord River was dammed in 1972 to form Lake Argyle the largest artificial lake in Australia which feeds the Ord Valley irrigation area (approx 150 sq. kls. of farmland).

- We have enough water to solve the water crisis experienced by much of Australia, but no one can work out how to use it for the benefit of the rest of the country.
